Tom Porter : Independent Project Consultant | Enterprise Architect

Projects completed

Over many years (more than ) I have had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects in the systems delivery and development space. In addition I had the priviledge to work with programme management experts from the Civil engineering industry to understand how they approach project management where the cost of failure can be much higher.

Core banking transformation for HSBC Private Bank

This project was global in scope and in capability. It involved a comprehensive replacement of all the systems and business processes for the bank including:

Core responsibilities

Troubled project recovery

I revised a complext integrated technology architecture deployment including Siebel CRM and Oracle Financials ERP which, on go live had failed and caused many millions of pounds of losses. I identified the root causes, the underlying organisational weakness that had led to it and appropriate technology fixes to recover the situation.

Core responsibilities

UK Immigration System re-engineering

For this comprehensive rewrite of the immigration system for the UK, as a consultant, I designed a new architecture and corresponding project which reconciled over 100 legacy data sources all with different data structures. I worked with the programme manager to develop a complete project plan, and subsequently the sales team taking a major part in selling the project to the UK Immigration directorate.

Core responsibilites

London Olympics Park Construction

I managed the architecture and processes for the project management of the Olympic park in east London, including the sheduling and programming systems used by all construction sub-contractors and individuals working on this £8 billion project. This included building information management processes from construction though handover, visualization technology, programme scheduling, programme "programming", earned value systtems and reporting.

Core responsibilities

I was responsible for understanding and quantifying the project management and commercial management processes then architecting the systems to implement those processes. This included a complex data management element which integrated the data for the contire build in SQL databases. It gave me a great opportunity to see world class project management first hand and gain insights into how the various moving parts interoperate.
